Beta Server Invite
We’re in the process of moving 43 Actions to the most modern servers available, on the brand new Heroku Cedar. This is a move quite unlike the previous one, where we merely exchanged server providers from HostingRails to Heroku.
Upgrading the entire application to work on a modern stack will allow us to more quickly add new features and have better performance and reliability. Some new...

Moving to Heroku
Due to the many sorrows we’ve collectively had with our current hosting provider hostingrails.com, we’ve decided to finally make the move to our new home: The fantastic guys over at Heroku. This will hopefully be a very seamless migration, but some things will, for now, cease to be available:
Mailing in actions isn’t possible on our current heroku setup. (However, if you really need this going...

43actions.com Crisis: Resolved
We’ve got quick notice on a massive server failure over at the 43actions.com hosting company. We thought these issues were behind us, but it seems not.
We’re in the process of switching hosting companies as we speak. Our last backup of your data is from the morning of May 7th, and we hope to be back up with this restored data very soon. All data as to right before the incident is now...

43actions.com is (no longer) down
Update 2: Thanks to one of our guys we managed to track down the OpenID login problem as well. Expect a new version of 43actions.com to be deployed in the next few days, together with some other neat features.
Update: We managed to isolate the problem ourselves and got 43actions.com back up. The server technicians are still trying to get the server up and running at full capacity, since resolving...

Spring Cleaning
In an effort to increase database performance and minimize storage requirements, we will, starting next Tuesday, remove accounts which are no longer used. We find unused accounts by looking at which accounts have not been confirmed yet. (You confirm your account by clicking the confirmation link in the email you got when you registered your 43 Actions account.) So, for extra safety, we recommend...

One more for our power users. Now you can access Today’s and This Week’s Agenda Summaries via the curl command-line application, and get either a straight XML or an ATOM feed. Note: This does not work with browsers. We only support curl at this moment. curl -G ‘http://user:pass@43actions.com/agenda/thisweek_feed.xml’ curl -G...

43 Actions: Towards a native iPhone application....
Apple recently revealed their plans for the “native” iPhone SDK (Software Development Kit). This was the announcement we had been waiting for for a long time, in order to start planning the development of native applications—applications that live directly on the iPhone, like Apple’s own apps—with the ability to interconnect and sync both with 43 Actions on the web,...

Site donations
We have had some recent inquires from companies and larger groups, wanting to get access to the donor exclusive features; and we have now come up with some proposals. The categories are groups of 5+, 10+, 50+ and 100+ users. Please email us at “43actions+site_donation at gmail dot com” for more information. Note: This is not a subscription model, nor is it a purchase of services with a...

How much is too little?
Update: Thanks to a recent surge in large donation sums, our average donation has now jumped to $35. Thank you all for your continued support!
We have over the weeks received some very nice emails from users asking how much they should donate [in EUR]; how much the average donation is, etc. So here is the gist of it:
The average donation started out at around $20 around the MacWorld 2008 launch...

Server issues
Update: The problem is now resolved and the database is up and running again. We’ll seriously consider a switch of service providers after this unacceptable breakdown. Our apologies for any inconveniences. Our hosting provider is having serious problems with their database, which is affecting many sites, including 43 Actions. We hold our thumbs that they will resolve this issue as soon as...

Regarding 43 Actions vs. the iPhone SDK
A lot of people, including ourselves, are salivating at the possibilities that will (hopefully) be unleashed by the iPhone Software Development Kit (SDK) that Apple is about to release. We are of course already investigating how this could fit into our own strategy going forward, with the intent of eventually releasing something that can live locally on your iPhone, and connect to 43 Actions...

43 Actions: Google AdSense advertising
Running a web application with the kind of daily traffic of a site like 43actions.com brings with it some quite substantial costs in bandwidth and hosting fees—in addition to the cost of the time it takes to actually develop the application.
To help move towards attaining a sustainable business model—so we can continue to stay online in the future, for the benefit of all our users,...
